Dr. Hopeton Dunn to Head CPTC

Communication Specialist and Senior Lecturer at the UWI, Dr. Hopeton Dunn is to assume executive leadership at the Creative Production and Training Centre Limited (CPTC) for two years, on secondment from the University of the West Indies (UWI). On the recommendation of the CPTC Board, and with the agreement of Government and the UWI, Dr. Dunn will assume responsibilities as Chairman and CEO of the CPTC from August 2, 2003. In the interim, however, he will continue to teach and supervise graduate students in the MA and Phd.

Fourth Intra-Regional Migration Seminar

The Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies will be hosting a forum on past associations and future links between the Caribbean and the Republic of Colombia, from July 9 – 11, 2003. This will be done within the framework of the Fourth Annual Intra-Regional Migration Seminar coordinated by the Latin American-Caribbean Centre, UWI Mona, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in Jamaica.

Impact of Natural Hazards in Jamaica

The Unit for Disaster Studies, Department of Geography & Geology, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, UWI, Mona, in association with the Geological Society of Jamaica, the Jamaica Geographical Society, National Environment & Planning Agency and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management present a public lecture titled What Can Be Done To Reduce the Impact of Natural Hazards in Jamaica. The speaker is Dr. Earl. E. Brabb, Scientist Emeritus, United States Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California. The lecture will take place on Thursday, July 17 at 5.45 p.m.

National Gallery of Jamaica

The National Gallery of Jamaica wishes to advise the UWI Community that effective Tuesday, June 3, 2003, its entrance fees have been increased as follows: adults $100.00, tertiary students $50.00 and children in uniform $10.00. Fees for guided tours remain at $800.00 for groups not exceeding 25 persons. The National Gallery is also inviting staff and students of the UWI to become members of the Gallery. Membership guarantees free entry and official invitations to all exhibitions held at the Gallery. The Gallery’s opening hours are: Tuesdays – Thursdays 10:00 a.m.

New Courses at CARIMAC

The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, (CARIMAC) at UWI Mona will be offering four new courses in communication come January 2004. Head of CARIMAC Drs. Marjan de Bruin says the Institute will offer three new certificate courses in Print and Online Journalism; Television and Broadcasting; and Public Relations; and a new master programme called Communication for Behaviour and Social Change.

Oxford Honours Vice Chancellor

UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, was yesterday, July 3 conferred with the Doctor of Civil Law degree, Honoris Causa from the University of Oxford at a special convocation in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. In the citation to the Vice Chancellor, he was lauded as "a man of great versatility, effective in action, outstanding in erudition and most supple in dance". It noted that he is "unmatched in the learning and acuteness of his understanding of the lives of his people". Professor Nettleford is the third West Indian to be so honoured.

PAHO Appointment

Dr. Carissa Etienne (Class of ’76) has been appointed Assistant Director of Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) effective July 3. Dr. Etienne, a General Practitioner and Medical School Professor, has a strong background in public health. A national of Dominica, she holds a medical degree from the University of the West Indies and a Master’s degree in Community Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Pan African Research Team

A Pan African research team with membership from continental African countries, USA, Brazil and the Caribbean will meet in Jamaica from July 14 to 26 to continue research under the theme Spirituality and Materiality: Religion and Poverty. The group is examining whether it is a myth or fact that people of African heritage, where ever they are to be found, are usually at the lower economic strata of society because they are influenced by religion. The team will begin this aspect of its study with an opening session on Monday, July 14, at 9:00 a.m.

Professor Emeritus "George" Sidrak

The University Of The West Indies, Mona Campus has learned with regret of the passing of Professor Emeritus Girgis Hanna ‘George’ Sidrak, in the United Kingdom on Saturday, June 28, 2003. Professor Sidrak gave distinguished service to the university for some thirty-six years between 1960 and 1996, both as an academic and administrator.

Registration Packages for New Students

All successful applicants (except those offered places in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities & Education who are awaiting A’Level/CAPE results) who have accepted the offer of a place at the Mona Campus, may collect their registration materials at the following locations on the Campus: Assembly Hall July 14 – July 18; Old Dramatic Theatre, July 21 – 31; Assembly Hall, August 4 – September 5. Opening hours are Mondays – Fridays, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
