Professor Barbara Bailey Elected Jamaica’s Representative of CEDAW Committee

The fifteenth meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was convened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York recently to elect new members to serve on the CEDAW Committee.

Professor Rolf Richards Memorial Lecture

The Department of Medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the Professor Rolf Richards Memorial Lecture on Friday September 12, 2008 at 5 pm at the Main Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Edward Horton, Director of the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston will deliver the lecture.

UWI Launches BSc in Management Studies (Entrepreneurship)

“The Role of Tertiary Institutions in the Development of Innovation and Enterprise” is the title of the address being given by Hon. Karl Samuda, Minister of Industry and Commerce at the Launch of the Bachelor of Science in Management Studies (Entrepreneurship) degree at The University of the West Indies, Mona. The Launch Ceremony takes place on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 6:00 pm at the Undercroft, The University of the West Indies, Mona.

Faculty of Social Sciences Closure

The Faculty of Social Sciences will observe Tuesday, August 19, as Faculty Day 2008. As a result, all the administrative offices in the Faculty will be closed to the public for the day. Normal activities will resume on Wednesday, August 20, 2007.

July-at-the-UWI 2008 goes to Barbados and Antigua

The twelfth July-at-the-UWI programme for children ages 12 to 18 years was successfully delivered recently. The focus of this year’s programme was The Environment, and as usual, the science was enriched with aspects of the history and culture of countries which contribute to the UWI. Module 1 was based at the UWI, Mona campus and involved courtesy calls, interviews, field visits and recreational trips in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Ann. Module II was delivered in Barbados and St. Lucia.

Library and Information Studies Orientation and Registration Session

The Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of the West Indies wishes to advise students pursing this degree option that special Orientaion and Registartion sessions have been organized. The session for undergraduate students take place on Thursday, August 28, 2008 between 2 pm and 4 pm at the Main Library, Multifunctional Room, UWI, Mona and the session for postgraduate students on Friday, August 29, 2008 between 2 pm and 4 pm in the Department of Library and Information Studies Seminar Room.

Orientation 2008

The University of the West Indies through the Office of Student Services and Development has organized Orientation activities geared towards new students running from August 17 -22. The Orientation exercise is designed to familiarize new students with the University campus, student development programmes and activities and to assist students in adjusting to university experience.

Three at UWI, Mona Named Recipients of the 2008 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

Since its establishment in 1993 the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence has sought to recognise high achievement by academic and senior administrative staff, as an initiative of former Vice-Chancellor, Sir Alister McIntyre. As many as five awards may be given in any one year in one of the following areas: teaching, administration and research accomplishments, service to the University Community, contributions to public service, and all-round excellence in a combination of two or more of the five core areas.

UN Appoints UWI Alumna as Assistant Secretary General for Human Management

United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon recently announced the appointment of UWI Alumna, Catherine Pollard, a Guyanese as Assistant Secretary – General for Human Resources Management. Ms. Pollard replaces Jan Beagle, who has been appointed Deputy Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva.
