Professor Rolf Richards Memorial Lecture
The Department of Medicine at The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the Professor Rolf Richards Memorial Lecture on Friday September 12, 2008 at 5 pm at the Main Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Edward Horton, Director of the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard University will deliver the lecture. His lecture is titled ‘Approaches to the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes-What works?’
The university community is invited.
The event is a part of the University’s 60th anniversary celebration.
Study Skills Workshops
The University Health Centre hosts a series of Study Skills workshops designed to help students to achieve academic excellence. The Series begins on Thursday, September 11, 2008 and continues until Thursday, October 16, 2008, beginning at 2 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture theatre (N1) for each session.
The first session on Thursday, September 11, 2008 addresses the topic ‘Assessing your Learning Styles.’ Upcoming sessions will highlight topics including: Time Management; Stress Management and Improving your Note taking Skills.
Library Training Session
The Mona Information Literacy Unit (MILU) at The University of the West Indies, Mona will hold training sessions at the Main Library training room for ALL students. The first training sessions will address Searching the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) on September 8-12 and 15-19 starting at 9 am, 12 noon and 6 pm each day.
Students are asked to register for one session ONLY by signing at the whiteboard in the Catalogue Hall, Main Library. Upcoming training sessions will be held on Searching Databases.
Late Registration for Postgraduate Students
Postgraduate students are advised that late registration will be effective from Monday, September 15 to Friday, September 19, 2008.
Condolence –Richard Rowe
The University of the West Indies, Mona has learnt with regret of the passing of Mr. Richard Collintine Rowe, Senior Library Attendant at the Main Library, on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.
Mr. Rowe joined the UWI Library staff at Mona as a temporary Library Attendant on January 26, 1984. His temporary employment was extended several times, and such was his performance that Mr. Rowe gained permanent employment in June 1984.
Matriculation Ceremony
The University of the West Indies, Mona will host its annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for all first year students on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 4:00 pm in the Assembly Hall. Students are required to assemble on the lawn facing the Undercroft by 2:15 pm for the signing of the Matriculation Register at 2:30 pm.
Public Lecture
“What Hippocrates knew and we have forgotten” is the title of the public lecture being hosted by the Department of Medicine at The University of the West Indies, Mona. Dr. John Patrick, Professor of the History of Science and Medicine and President of Augustine College in Ottawa, Canada will deliver the public lecture on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Launch of UWI BSc in Entrepreneurship Postponed
The Launch Ceremony for the Bachelor of Science in Management Studies (Entrepreneurship) scheduled for August 28, 2008 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona has been POSTPONED.
UWI, MONA CAMPUS TO CLOSE DUE TO HURRICANE THREAT
Owing to the threat posed by Tropical Storm Gustav, all activities at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies will be suspended at 10:00 a.m. today, Thursday, August 28, 2008 and the Campus will remain closed tomorrow in the event that Gustav hits Jamaica.
Members of staff should ensure that their departments are secured. Essential services and Emergency operations will remain open.
Special arrangements are being made for students who are resident on campus to remain in hall.
Wellness Tip
Make exercise part of a routine – schedule the time for it. For many of us this is a real challenge so here are some tips:
- remember that if you do exercises you enjoy, you will be more likely to do them
- exercising with company will help you to keep going on those days when you feel like giving up your routine
- choose the time of day that works best for you
- if for some reason you stop, make it temporary; don’t get upset with yourself for stopping, just restart your routine as soon as possible.
