Inaugural Professorial Lecture- Professor Jacobs

"Natural Products from Caribbean Biodiversity - The Promise and the Challenges" is the title of the inaugural professorial lecture to be delivered by Professor Helen Jacobs. The lecture takes place Thursday, June 5 at 6 pm in the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5), UWI, Mona.

UWI Singers 50th Season Concert

The University Singers celebrates its Golden Jubilee and stages its special fiftieth anniversary Concert Season running from May 29 to June 29.  Each show begins nightly at 8 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, Thursdays to Sundays, with an additional matinee show on Sundays, starting at 4 pm. Audiences will be able to re-experience some of the group’s best works, as the repertoire this year consists mainly of favourites from former years.

Call for Abstracts – FMS Annual Research Conference

The Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona will host its 17th Annual Research Conference from November 12-14 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations at the Conference. The deadline for submission is Thursday, July 31.  Abstracts should be sent via e-mail to fmsarc@uwimona.edu.jm and hardcopy submitted to and addressed to The Conference Secretary, Annual Research Conference Committee.

6th Caribbean Reasoning Conference

The Centre for Caribbean Thought, the University of the West Indies in collaboration with the Department of Africana Studies, Brown University and the University of California, Los Angeles present the 6th “Caribbean Reasoning” Conference titled “M. G. Smith and the Emergence of Social Anthropology and Social Theory in the Caribbean and Beyond”. The Conference takes place from June 11-13 at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Call for Papers- Building a Region Fit for Children: Promoting Child Rights through Research

The third research conference on children’s issues is being held under the theme “Building a Region Fit for Children: Promoting Child Rights through Research” on October 21-22.

Registration still open for CARIMAC Summer School

Summer School at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) continues in June and July with courses in production, design, writing, photography, new media and communication techniques.

This year’s programme features new production and design courses in Motion Graphic Design using After Effects (June 21), Photoshop (June 30), Character Animation (July 22) and Digital Audio Editing (June 23).

CARIMAC also will offer a hands-on crash course on HTML fundamentals (June 23) to complement the Website Design course which begins on June 30.

Foreign Language Courses

The Language Lab at the University of the West Indies, Mona offers non-credit summer courses in Spanish and Japanese.  Classes in Basic Japanese run from on June 2 to 20 on Mondays to Fridays, 5-7 pm. The cost is $6,500.00. Classes in Basic Spanish I and II are scheduled for    June 9 to August 18, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 - 7 pm. The cost is $8,500.

Basic Research Skills Training Workshop

The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council (CHRC), Trinidad and Tobago will host a Basic Research Skills Training Workshop from    May 26 - 29, 2008 at the Multifunctional Room at the Main Library, UWI, Mona.
