The Science of Self-Deception
American evolutionary biologist and sociobiologist Robert Trivers will deliver a distinguished lecture titled “Lying to Others and Lying to Yourself-The Science of Self Deception.” The lecture takes place on Thursday, May 29 at 6 pm at the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5), UWI, Mona.
Robert Trivers is a professor of anthropology and biological sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. While on sabbatical, he is serving as a visiting professor of psychology at Harvard University.
'Transatlantic Policing: A Caribbean Island Perspective'
'Transatlantic Policing: A Caribbean Island Perspective' is the title of the public seminar being hosted by the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, Mona on Tuesday, May 20 at 6 pm at SR16. Benjamin Bowling, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at King's College, London will deliver the lecture.
Professor Barbara Bailey Receives Ninth CARICOM Triennial Award
Professor Barbara Bailey, University Director, Centre for Gender and Developmental Studies is the recipient of the Ninth CARICOM Triennial Award for Women, 2008. The decision to select Professor Bailey for this award was taken by Members of the Regional Selection Sub-Committee, and subsequently supported by the CARICOM Members states.
New Opening Hours of Commuting Students Lounge
The new opening hours for the commuting students lounge during the exam period is 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Mondays to Fridays. The lounge will be closed at the end of the semester on May 21, 2008.

6th Annual Caribbean Reasoning Conference
The Centre for Caribbean Thought, the University of the West Indies in collaboration with the Department of Africana Studies, Brown University and the University of California, Los Angeles present the 6th annual “Caribbean Reasoning” Conference titled “M. G. Smith and the Emergence of Social Anthropology and Social Theory in the Caribbean and Beyond”. The Conference takes place from June 11-13 at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
Re-Introduced Taxi Policy
The UWI Mona Taxi Policy will be re-introduced from May 19, 2008. The Taxi Policy is designed to enhance the safety and security of staff, students and visitors on the Mona Campus, as well as reduce disregard for traffic regulations. The main features of the policy are:
University Players production of A Tempest celebrates Aimé Césaire
The University Players, the resident theatre company of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at the University of the West Indies, Mona will be staging an English translation of Aimé Césaire’s play A Tempest (Une tempête) from May 15-25. The opening performance of A Tempest will be presented at the Philip Sherlock Centre, UWI on Thursday May 15 at 8:00 p.m. It continues for a total of eight performances until May 25, playing Thursday to Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 6 pm.
The Beast Within
"The Beast within: helminth infection in Jamaica" is the title of the inaugural professorial lecture to be delivered by Dr. Ralph Robinson, Professor of Parasitology. The lecture takes place Thursday, May 15 at 6 pm in the Physiology Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
