Renaming of Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management Unit
The Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management Unit of the University of the West Indies, Mona will be renamed in honour of Professor Hugh Wynter, first director of the Unit, on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 3 pm. The building will be renamed the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit.
The Unit is being renamed to honour the outstanding contribution of Professor Wynter who was instrumental in the establishment and development of the Unit until his retirement. The event also forms a part of the University’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
The University Singers in Concert and Reunion
There will be two special performances of the University Singers on July 17 and July 18 at 8:00 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, as part of the celebrations during Convocation Week, for the 60th anniversary of the UWI and the 50th anniversary of the University Singers. “Caribbean Impact, Global Reach”
“Caribbean Impact, Global Reach” is the title of the Accounting Symposium taking place on Thursday, July 17, 2008 starting at 8:30 am at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT), UWI, Mona. The keynote address will be delivered by Chair and Professor of Accountancy, University of Akron, Professor Thomas Calderon.
“Digital Television Standards: Its Implications for Jamaica”
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Jamaica Section, will host a special two hour presentation titled “Digital Television Standards: Its Implications for Jamaica” on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel at 6 pm.
Robert Graves, Chairman of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) Forum, USA, will deliver the presentation. His presentation will explore the ATSC standards, the economic and technical advantages and reasons for adaptation of ATSC standards in Jamaica/CARICOM.
Bookshop Closure
The University Bookshop will be closed for its annual stock-taking Exercise on Monday, July 21, 2008.
At the end of the stock–taking exercise removal operations will commence. The Bookshop will resume business at 2A Gibraltar Hall Road on Monday, August 11, 2008.
UWI Convocation Week Celebration Starts on July 12
The University of the West Indies 60th anniversary celebrations will climax at Mona during July 12-19 as the University marks its anniversary with a Convocation Week.

Foundations and Directions: Celebrating Geography and Geology at UWI
The Department of Geography and Geology, The University of the West Indies hosts a regional meeting on ‘Foundations and Directions: Celebrating Geography and Geology at The University of the West Indies’. The meeting is scheduled for July 7-11 at the UWI, Mona and begins with an Opening Ceremony on Monday, July 7, 2008 at the New Physiology Lecture Theatre at 6 pm. Dr. Leonard Nurse will deliver the keynote address at the Opening Ceremony.
Signing of MOU Between Department of Physics and CERE
The Department of Physics, UWI, Mona will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for collaborative research in alternative energy with the Centre for Excellence in Renewable Energy (CERE) and Wigton Windfarm Limited (WWFL). The signing takes place on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 2:15 pm at the Inter Faculty Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
CARALL AGM & Conference
The Caribbean Association of Law Librarians (CARALL) hosts its 23rd Annual General Meeting and Conference on July 7-9, 2008 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel. The theme of the Conference is “Viable, Vital and Vibrant: Be Prepared to Succeed.”
