The Mona Campus Research Ethics Committee is an independent body housed in the Faculty of Medical Sciences consisting of members from each Faculty whose responsibility is to protect the safety of research participants and maintain integrity in the conduct of research involving humans and animals. The Committee considers the suitablity of the methods and procedures used, and the issues related to the informed consent of subjects. The UWI Mona Campus Research Ethics Committee seeks to ensure that high ethical standards are incorporated and maintained in the conduct of research at the University.

About-support

  • Review prospectively all research protocols involving human subjects proposed within the UWI Mona Campus
  • Monitor at least quarterly, those approved research projects that carry possible significant risk of harm to research subjects with the committee being empowered to disallow unacceptable research from going forward.
  • Ensure the humane treatment of animals being used experimentally for research and teaching in accordance with the laws of Jamaica
  • Provide Analysis, where requested of the ethical aspects of existing or proposed policies for the UWI Mona Campus.
