Second year MSc Accounting student at Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) , Debra Kaye Brown is the recipient of the  2023 Kenneth Chung Memorial Scholarship. Launched in 2020, The Kenneth Chung Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the family of the late Kenneth Chung in association with the Institute of Chartered Accountants ( ICAJ), is awarded annually to  a student who has successfully completed the first year of the MSc in Accounting programme and has demonstrable financial need.

Ms Brown who is an Accounting Officer at  Whim Development Company Limited was chosen from a very competitive group after an interview with representatives of the ICAJ, the Chung family and the MSBM.  In addition to her professional  commitments, Ms Brown is very involved in her church as a member of the Sunday School and Dance ministries as well as being involved in her community  where she serves as she Administrator of the Old Harbour Bay Development Team (OHDT), Acting Assistant Secretary of the Old Harbour Community Development Association(CDA) and is a member of the Old Harbour Bay Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The runner up  Shaneica Spence was presented with an award by the Chung family.

Both students were presented with their awards at a  ceremony  held on Wednesday, December 27th at the ICAJ headquarters.  Mr Gary Butch Hendrickson, Chief Executive Officer, Continental Baking Company was the Guest Speaker with representatives of the Chung family, the ICAJ and MSBM in attendance.

In her response, Ms Brown explained that her academic journey was an inspirational one for others within her family, particularly those of the younger generation; and that she was collecting the scholarship not only for herself, but for her sisters, cousins and other relatives who looked up to her and saw her as a source of hope.

Similarly, Ms Spence expressed how humbled she was at being selected for the scholarship and for the “trust and confidence” that the family has placed in her to deliver well on their investment in her academic pursuits.

MSBM remains grateful to the Chung family for their continued support of students and their investment in higher education.
