Welcome to MSBM

 

Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) is a public institution established on August 1, 2012. It evolved from the Mona Institute of Business (MIOB) which was established in 1987 through a USAID funded Management Education Project in the Department of Management Studies (DOMS) of the Faculty of Social Sciences, at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona. 

The MIOB was later renamed the Mona School of Business (MSB). In 2012, the MSB and the DOMS were merged to create the MSBM. The MSB had a 25-year history of delivering master’s level business management education and the DOMS had a rich 42-year history of delivering undergraduate and graduate management programmes. 

Each stage in the evolution of the MSBM resulted in strategic shifts that allowed the Organization to improve ties with the business and management sector in Jamaica and the Caribbean, and harness the academic knowledge of the wider UWI.

August 1, 2022, marked a very special milestone in the life of our School as ten years ago on August 1, 2012, the Mona School of Business (MSB) and the Department Of Management Studies (DOMS) merged to form the Mona School of Business & Management (MSBM). MSBM inherited the rich traditions, strength and impact of both parents and emerged “Stronger Together” to become the premier Business School in the Caribbean, offering a diverse suite of globally competitive undergraduate and graduate degree programmes as well as sought-after executive education programmes and cutting-edge consultancy services. 

Over the past decade since the merger, the school has continued to build on our rich history and legacy and the MSBM brand has garnered strong resonance with our stakeholders including the business community, students, alumni and the wider UWI community. Guided by our vision, our ethos has been one of excellence, innovation, and knowledge creation as we build a world class institution with best-in-class programmes and cutting-edge research, supported by a world class team of faculty and staff members.

MSBM is a key plank of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona’s value proposition to its constituents in Jamaica and the region. Specifically, its mandate is to be the arm of the University that facilitates effective business education and practices in the private and public sectors in order to advance the economic development agenda of Jamaica and the region by:

  • Creating human capital through business and management education programmes,
  • Delivering executive education and professional development training,
  • Creating intellectual capital through the conduct of research and the dissemination of the findings,
  • Providing management consultancy services,
  • Creating social capital through outreach activities in the wider society.

 

An Excellent Learning Environment

 

MSBM offers undergraduate (BSc) degree programmes in Accounting, Banking and Finance (offered jointly with the Department of Economics), Chemistry Management (administered by the Faculty of Science and Technology), Entrepreneurship, General Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Operations Management and Tourism Management.

Globally competitive graduate degree programmes offered by MSBM include: the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), Master in Business Administration (MBA) - Internationally Accredited by AMBA, Master of Science (MSc) degree programmes in: Accounting, Computer Based Management Information Systems (CBMIS), Corporate Finance, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Marketing and Data Analytics and National Security and Strategic Studies. All programmes are offered in an excellent learning environment, using a pool of talented and highly qualified local and international faculty.

Cutting Edge Consultancy Services

MSBM complements its unique academic programmes with cutting edge consultancy services and public policy research, the principal business objective being to provide decision makers with expert advice for handling their most critical strategic issues.

In this regard MSBM has handled a large portfolio of multidisciplinary projects in Jamaica and the region relating to leadership and management development, strategic thinking and management, project and performance management systems, and other areas of professional services and continues to contribute to the development of a particular ethos within the business community in Jamaica and the region.

Partnerships

 

Mona School of Business and Management has been recognized by highly reputable international bodies for partnerships, and in that regard, the World Economic Forum (WEF) selected MSBM as its partner institution for administering the Global Competitiveness Survey for Jamaica and the Project Management Institute (PMI) has named MSBM as an Authorized Training Partner (A.T.P.) an upgrade from the previous status as a Registered Education Provider. The designation validates that an organization meets or exceeds PMI’s rigorous quality standards and can deliver world class, effective project management training and education. 

In June 2020 MSBM became a member of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®) as part of the institute’s Academic Program Membership. As the global thought leader and voice of the business analysis community, IIBA® actively supports the recognition of the profession, and works to maintain global standards for the ongoing development of the practice and certifications.
