Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) mourns the passing of  Dr Marshall Hall, former head of the Department of Management Studies, a precursor to Mona School of Business and Management and former board member of the then Mona School of Business.

Professor  Neville Ying, former Executive Director, Mona School of Business reflects in his book “Servant Leader in Action “that  Dr Hall conducted a seminal research study which pointed to the critical need for an adequate number of private sector managers with post-graduate training  in companies in CARICOM countries. This research study informed the development of the UWI-USAID Management Education Project and provided guidance for two important outcomes of this Project:  the first EMBA programme offered by UWI and the Mona Institute of Business which evolved into the Mona School of Business and now the Mona School of Business and Management”.

Dr Hall has the distinction of being the first head of the Department of Management Studies. Through his instrumentality, the field of management as a discipline was given legitimacy underlying the connection between economic development and business.  He was instrumental in building a cadre of managers who were more than number crunchers but who could synthesize the various elements of business and management.  The early Department of Management Studies benefitted from this and helped to redefine management, raised the profile of and expanded the concept of the Caribbean manager.

A businessman and scholar, he was a bridge between town and gown and served in many roles within the university as he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chairman of the University of the West Indies Mona Campus Council and a Member of the Council of the University of the West Indies.

“ MSBM is indebted to Marshall Hall’s vision and contribution to the School’s rich history of providing business and management education of the highest calibre with graduates making a significant contribution in Jamaica and the region”  stated Dr David McBean, Executive Director, MSBM.

A patriot, Dr Hall was awarded the Order of Jamaica for service to the public and the fields of agriculture, industry, and education in 2010.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues and assure them of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
