UWI Professor among key drivers of UN declared Global Tourism Resilience Day

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to designate February 17 annually as Global Tourism Resilience Day. The resolution was initiated by Professor Lloyd Waller from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) who also serves as Executive Director of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC), which is hosted at The UWI Mona Campus.

UWItv is pleased to announce the launch of a new series in its programming entitled “UWI’s PhDs, a Conversation in Development.” This special series, highlighting the research and findings of the doctoral research and theses of UWI PhD graduates, was designed and developed in partnership with the University’s School for Graduate Studies and Research.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will be co-hosting the Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC) (Caribbean edition) with The Royal Society from February 7-9, 2023. The closed conference will be hosted at The Jamaica Pegasus under the theme of ‘Science for a resilient future’.
 
The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of some of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine.

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, has announced that the University’s Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda is set for a “magnificent take-off”. He was speaking during a ceremony held at the Campus on January 17, during which Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, The Honourable Gaston Browne signed an agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) to secure US$80 million to invest in the development of The UWI’s youngest landed campus.

Dr. Peter Nelson cops SRC Young Scientist/Technologist Award 2022

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Dr. Peter Nelson copped the coveted SRC Young Scientist/Technologist Award for 2022.

The Award was presented at the Scientific Research Council's National Inventions Awards and Science Medal Luncheon in November 2022, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on the heels of the 7th Biennial Science and Technology Conference held under the theme, 'Harnessing the Power of Research and Innovation to Drive Economic Resilience'.

The American Historical Association has voted to select Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as its Honorary Foreign Scholar for 2023.  The Association has annually recognised a foreign scholar since 1885, and the list includes the most acclaimed international historians. Beginning with Leopold von Ranke (1885), it showcases well-known names such as George Trevelyan (1944), Sir Winston Churchill (1963), Fernand Braudel (1966), Eric Hobsbawm (1994) and

The UWI announces Dr Beverly-Anne Carter’s Professorship

The Office of Administration at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to recognise the Professorship appointment of Dr Beverly-Anne Carter who retired in October 2022.

Professor Carter earned her promotion to the highest academic rank at the institution following a rigorous assessment process by independent external assessors, which included evaluation of the quality and quantity of her research, publications, and other professional activities, including enhancement of the University’s reputation. Her appointment took effect during the last quarter of 2022.

Monthly historic parish hikes, sharing scholarship through lectures and other learning activities, as well as an educational bus tour on Emancipation Day are among a raft of yearlong outreach activities planned to mark the 60th anniversary of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus which dovetails with the regional University’s 75th anniversary. Cave Hill, the third landed campus of The UWI community, opened in 1963 at a temporary location at the Deep-Water Harbour, before moving to its current location in 1967.
