Awards for UWI Caribbean Climate Change and Health Leaders

Health systems in the Caribbean remain highly vulnerable to impacts from climate change, both on the quality and the capacity of services, as well as on the socio-economic and environmental determinants of health.  These impacts have been well documented: extreme weather conditions; heat waves; more frequent strong and devastating hurricanes; recurring and extended periods of drought followed by excessive rainfall; increased levels of air pollution and sea-level rise.

Hands off the BVI

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) joins with CARICOM in calling on Britain to retreat from stated political calls to subvert and subordinate the sovereignty of the people of the Virgin Islands. This is the second occasion in recent weeks in which we have called for respect of the national rights of a community; having done so following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We are committed to the decolonization of the Caribbean and deplore the persistence of colonial rule of the people in the region.

The UWI and University of Waterloo, Canada sign a Student Mobility Agreement to facilitate Exchange of Students

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and Canada’s University of Waterloo (UW) have renewed a landmark student mobility agreement. After finalising the details of the arrangement in 2021, officials of the two Universities met virtually on Thursday May 5 for the symbolic signing of the agreement.

The agreement strengthens opportunities for internationalizing educational programmes through student mobility initiatives, aimed at developing global citizenship, increasing adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and intercultural communication skills.

UWI Partners with Chronixx, AddisCoder, Inc. and members of the diaspora to host JamCoders Summer Camp

In April, The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the third instalment of its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) series on climate change and its impacts. This latest report addresses the mitigation of climate change.

Dr. Francis O. Severin is confirmed as Principal of The UWI Open Campus

During the Annual Business Meeting of The University of the West Indies Council held on April 29, Dr Francis O. Severin was confirmed as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Open Campus. Dr Severin’s appointment, which takes effect from August 1, 2022, was among several senior appointments and reappointments made at the meeting of the Council—the highest governing and decision-making authority of The UWI.

Media Statement: An incident of Sexual Assault at The UWI Mona

The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus wishes to advise the public that on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at approximately 2 p.m., one of our female students was sexually assaulted in a restroom in the vicinity of the Annex and Senate Buildings. The incident was immediately reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and a team was deployed to the Campus to investigate. The UWI Mona Campus takes this matter very seriously and is providing all the relevant assistance to the police to apprehend the perpetrator. We are also providing psychosocial support for our student.

Director, Business Development Office Elected to the Board of the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF)

Mr. Fabian Stewart

The University of the West Indies Mona, is pleased to announce that Director (Acting) of the Business Development Office, Mr. Fabian Stewart, was elected to the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Board of Directors where he will serve a two-year term. The announcement was made at the biennial PAHF Congress held in Santiago, Chile in January 2022.
