Sir Hilary Appointed Chairman/Chancellor of  the United Nations University

The United Nations University at the sitting of its Governance Council on December 7, 2024, in Tokyo, Japan, unanimously appointed Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, its new Chairman/Chancellor, effective May 2025.

Noting that Sir Hilary has established a global reputation as a strategic planner in higher education, respected scholar, and thought leader in development thinking, the Council expressed its keenness to work under his Chairmanship as the University enters its 50th anniversary this year.

On January 7, 1947, the governing body of the University College of the West Indies held its first meeting in Jamaica, paving the way for the establishment of The UWI's first campus at Mona. Just a year later, the campus welcomed its first class of 33 medical students.


Fast forward to January 7, 2018, and again in 2023, "UWI Day" was officially declared by governments across the region, marking the beginning of our 60th and 75th anniversary celebrations.

UWI Alumni Make Historic Debut on Windies Cricket Team

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is celebrating the debut of former student cricketers Amir Jangoo and Jediah Blades on the West Indies Men's Cricket Team. The duo, who first received their regional exposure by representing The UWI on the Combined Campuses and Colleges first-class and List A cricket teams, later progressed to play for their national teams. They were selected to participate in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh, which took place at Warner Park in St. Kitts on Thursday, December 12.

The Hugh Wynter Institute for Reproductive Health and Endoscopic Surgery (HWI-RHES) at The University of The West Indies (UWI), Mona, celebrates graduate student Treka Lewis' national recognition.

Lewis, is a current M.Sc. Counselling student at HWI-RHES, who had received the Order of Distinction (OD) for her outstanding contributions to National Poor Relief Services and Community Development during the Jamaica National Awards Ceremony on October 21st, 2024.

The University recently hosted its second annual postgraduate student conference from November 20 to 22. The event featured over 60 presentations that highlighted extensive multidisciplinary research conducted by students on a variety of topics, including health, climate resilience, sustainable development, and agriculture.

UWI Mona Researchers Develop Jamaican Black Castor Oil Standards

Jamaica Castor Industry stakeholders celebrated the development of proposed phenotypic, genetic and physiochemical standards for Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) at The UWI/Compete Caribbean Jamaica Castor Symposium. The event was hosted at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus on November 8, 2024. It is expected that these standards will form the basis for obtaining a Geographic Indication (G.I.) for JBCO and to accelerate the process of “clawing back” a significant portion of the US$300 million JBCO global market for Jamaican producers.

The UWI signs new Dutch partnership

UWI Pro Vice-Chancellor, Global Affairs, Ms. Sandrea Maynard signs the MoU at The UWI’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica with Legal Officer, Ms. Haydee Gordon looking on.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has formalised a new global partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) from the Netherlands. This cross-continental academic collaboration was signed into effect by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Affairs at The UWI, Sandrea Maynard, and the President of BUas, Dr. Jorrit Snijder, during a virtual ceremony on November 12.
