UWI expert tapped to participate in Climate Change and Health policy global research initiative

Professor Anthony Clayton, The University of the West Indies’ leading expert in foresighting and future-oriented planning, has been recruited by The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) to participate in a new initiative to assemble the world’s best solutions for climate change and health policies. The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) is a global research network that links all of the Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine of the world.
 

UWI Students among Athletes Qualified to the Inaugural Hockey5s World Cup - Oman 2024

Five students of the UWI Mona Campus were among Team Jamaica (Men) that qualified for the 2024 Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman. Director of the Business Development Office, Adjunct Lecturer, MSc. Sports Business Management (UWI), Mona Academy of Sports, and President of the Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF), Fabian Stewart, was elated at the team’s historic performance and is looking forward to improved preparation and support for the upcoming World Cup.

The UWI mourns the passing of Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton

The University of the West Indies extends sympathy to the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis on the passing of its distinguished statesman, former Governor General, Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton.
A friend of the University, Sir Tapley was among the most vibrant and visible patrons of The UWI’s annual Global Giving programme. Since 2017, in his support, he hosted the yearly Global Giving & Pelican Award Ceremony at Government House in collaboration with the UWI Alumni Association – Saint Kitts and Nevis Chapter.

Digicel Foundation & CMSS hand over STEM Equipment to Spanish Town High School

The Spanish Town High School, a participant in the National Baking Company Foundation (NBCF)/Building Out Our Stem Teachers (BOOST) programme, has received a substantial investment in STEM equipment valued at JMD$440,000. The donation, made possible by Digicel Foundation (JMD$400,000.00) and Chemical Medical and Scientific Supplies (CMSS) (JMD$40,000.00), was officially presented at a ceremony held on June 13, 2023, at Spanish Town High School.

At the 14th Annual UWI Toronto Benefit Awards held in at the Ritz Carlton on April 29, Scotiabank, Lead Sponsor of the event since its inception in 2010, committed $600,000.00 Canadian Dollars in support of The UWI’s scholarship programme over the next six years.

The UWI, Mona on Wednesday June 7th 2023 signalled its commitment to press full steam ahead with plans to become a climate-smart university and leader in E-mobility research. 
This renewed burst of energy comes after Professor Dale Webber, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus, and Mr. Zachary Harding, Director, Flash Motors Company Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the deployment of The University’s first Electric Vehicle (EV) Smart Charging Station donated by that company.
 

The UWI celebrates alum’s rise to Presidency of the UN General Assembly

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) celebrates with great pride the appointment of one of its distinguished alumni to the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).  Announced on June 01 as the President of the 78th Session of the UNGA, His Excellency Ambassador Dennis Francis is the first native of Trinidad and Tobago and the second UWI alum to hold the position. He joins His Excellency Dr Samuel Rudolph Insanally of Guyana, who graduated from the University College of the West Indies (now The UWI) and served as the 48th UNGA President.
