The UWI announces the appointments of new Professors in the fields of Music, Law, Astronomy, Engineering, and Medical Microbiology

The Office of Administration at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of five academics to Professors, the highest academic rank at the institution. The newly appointed are Professor David Akombo in the field of music; Professor David Berry in the field of law; Professor Shirin Haque, the first at the University in the field of astronomy; Professor Krishpersad Manohar in the field of mechanical engineering and Professor Alison Merle Nicholson in the field of Medical Microbiology.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is celebrating Professor Shirin Haque, who has made history as the first in her field to rise to the regional University’s highest academic rank. The UWI alumna is not only the first Professor in the field of Astronomy at The UWI, but also the first in the English-speaking Caribbean. In fact, she is the only professional Astronomer in the region.

The Frontiers of Research in Caribbean Science and Technology (FORECAST) Conference is the premier science and technology academic conference in the Caribbean region, held in partnership with The UWI (Cave Hill, Mona, and St. Augustine campuses) and the University of Technology, Jamaica. The conference will be convened during August 10–12, 2022, under the theme Science and Technology: a D.R.I.V.E.R. of Transformation.

UWI expert tapped to participate in global research initiative to find a new model of efficient urbanization

The Urban Health and Wellbeing Program (UHWP), a new global research network, has recruited Professor Anthony Clayton, The University of the West Indies’ leading expert in foresighting and future-oriented planning, to lead on and share the lessons on urban design learned in the Caribbean.

The program, which will be implemented over the next three (3) years, is a joint initiative between the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) and the International Science Council (ISC).

The works edited by Andrew S. Downes, Compton Bourne, M. Education Experts examine transforming Caribbean education at UWI Vice-Chancellor's Forum

On Thursday, July 21, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) in collaboration with the Caribbean Centre for Educational Planning (CCEP) hosted a Vice-Chancellor’s Forum to discuss the Orlando Patterson Commission Report. The Report which presents a comprehensive review and assessment of Jamaica’s education system, its structure, operation, and processes was examined by regional education experts during two-hour hybrid event which aired live on UWItv.
