The UWI Mona to resume face-to-face learning modality and accommodation on all Halls of Residence

In light of the Government of Jamaica’s announcement to resume face-to-face modality across the education sector, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus, will begin offering current and incoming students of The UWI, Mona Campus, face-to-face classes in the 2022-2023 Academic Year.

New UN climate change report identifies urgent need for capacity building and adaptation strategies in small islands.

In February, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its latest global report. Better known as the Sixth Assessment Report of Working Group II (AR6-WG2), it reveals the impacts, vulnerabilities and risks of climate change, and focuses—more than previous reports—on adaptation solutions for human societies.

Among the 270 authors selected from 1037 top climate scientists around the globe nominated to contribute to the AR6-WG2 Report, three were experts from The University of the West Indies (The UWI).

UWI Professor releases new book on Digital Transformation for Higher Education Institutions

The new Chair of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Steering Committee and Head of the Digital Transformation Strategic Initiative, Professor Lloyd Waller, has published his latest book, ‘Digital Transformation for Higher Education Institutions: A Framework for the Future’.

Professor Waller’s book presents a roadmap for Digital Transformation and is the first of its kind to offer a guided approach to planning and implementing digital transformation in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Media Statement: Leaked Report

The University of the West Indies expresses deep concern about the leaked report pertaining to an inquiry by an independent review committee within the University to examine aspects of its human resource framework.

The Final Report was submitted to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor on March 17, 2022 under strict security protocols. The Vice-Chancellor has not yet seen the report as he has been traveling; nor have  members of the University’s executive management team; as his instruction was that the document be quarantined until his return to office.

Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management at the Mona School of Business and Management, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Dr.  Michelle McLeod is the first editor of a new publication on Tourism, Resilience and Sustainability. The book, titled: ‘Island Tourism Sustainability and Resiliency’ is published by Routledge Taylor and Francis Group and will be available next month.

The UWI mourns the passing of Dr. Hugh Sealy

“Dr. Hugh Sealy served our University and Caribbean region with distinction. He put his mind and heart into tackling the climate crisis facing the Caribbean. His teaching, research, scholarly publications, and expert contributions to technical advisory boards reflected his passion and commitment to both advancing the science on climate change issues faced by small states of the Caribbean. He also shared his knowledge and expertise with younger generations.

March 21 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The annual observance is recognised annually on the day that police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa.  In a commemorative statement, Professor of Social History and Director of the Centre for Reparation Research at The University of the West Indies, Professor Verene A.
