The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies, Mona (The UWI, Mona) has collaborated with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5C's), the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC) and the PJ Patterson Institute for Africa-Caribbean Advocacy to host a workshop under the theme Caribbean Climate: Detection and Attribution Science Workshop. The workshop is scheduled for June 10-14, 2024 on the grounds of the Mona Campus.

On 23 April, Dr Natalie Dietrich Jones, Research Fellow of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), participated in a historic Public Hearing of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) on the request for an Advisory Opinion OC-32 “Climate Emergency and Human Rights” by Colombia and Chile. The hearings took place at the Business School of the Cave Hill Campus between 23 and 25 April 2024.

UWI Workshop sensitizes 200 students about Sexual Harassment Prevention and Protection through Workshops

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus, through its Institute for Gender & Development Studies (IGDS), Mona Unit, concluded a series of workshops in March aimed at empowering students with the tools and knowledge to combat sexual harassment on the campus. The training, which involved 200 students from various backgrounds, was executed with funding support from the British High Commission in Jamaica.

Repatriation Milestone: Specimen of 170-Year-Old Jamaican Giant Galliwasp returns home

A rare Jamaican Giant Galliwasp (Celestus occiduus) specimen kept in The Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow in Scotland since the 1800s has finally returned to its homeland. Its return to Jamaica marks the successful joint repatriation operation between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the University of Glasgow (UofG). To ensure the safe journey of the specimen, a team of experts from The UWI and the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) travelled to Scotland from April 18 to 24.
