Leadership
The UWI is a hub for leadership development, offering a range of initiatives and opportunities designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead effectively. Through workshops, training sessions, and practical experiences, students are empowered to discover and develop their leadership potential. Challenge yourself to be extraordinary, expand your impact, and position yourself for local, regional, and international leadership opportunities.
The LEADER (Leadership Education and Development for Empowerment and Reform) Programme is OSSD's premier leadership experience, designed to inspire, challenge, and equip students to lead with confidence, purpose, and impact. Through dynamic conversations with influential leaders, engaging workshops, mentorship opportunities, and transformative learning experiences, participants develop the skills, mindset, and network needed to excel both on campus and beyond. More than a programme, The LEADER is a movement that empowers students to discover their potential, amplify their voice, and become the next generation of changemakers for Jamaica, the Caribbean, and the world.
Pelican Nest
Pelican Nest is The UWI Mona's flagship community engagement and civic responsibility initiative, designed to connect students with meaningful opportunities to serve, lead, and create positive change within their communities. Through volunteerism, outreach projects, service-learning experiences, and social impact initiatives, students are encouraged to become active citizens who contribute to the development and well-being of society. The programme develops a culture of compassion, social responsibility, leadership, and community partnership while providing students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom. Pelican Nest empowers students to make a lasting impact, develop a deeper understanding of community needs, and embrace the values of service that define the UWI graduate.
Environmental Awareness Programme

Join the movement to help preserve our environment and create a sustainable future for present and future generations.

First Year Experience
The First Year Experience (FYE) Programme is designed to support students as they transition into university life at The UWI. Through a variety of engaging activities, resources, and support services, first-year students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate their academic journey successfully. Students are paired with trained facilitators who provide guidance, encouragement, and support, helping them build a strong foundation for personal, social, and academic success throughout their university experience.
Cultural Exchange Programme
The Cultural Exchange Programme provides students with unique opportunities to broaden their global perspective through short-term international experiences. Designed as an alternative to traditional study abroad programmes, it offers rich cultural immersion and experiential learning in diverse settings. Students are typically selected based on their involvement and contributions to clubs, societies, and campus life.
Clubs & Societies
With over 60 active clubs and societies, The UWI offers students a wide range of opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and enrich their university experience. From advocacy and community outreach to sports, culture, and professional development, there is a club or society for everyone. Participation in clubs and societies encourages personal growth, leadership development, teamwork, and meaningful engagement with the campus community, helping to shape well-rounded graduates.
- Fusion
- Club Fusion is a vibrant showcase of UWI Mona's clubs and societies, held at Founders Park on selected Thursdays each semester. Under a shared theme, clubs create interactive displays, highlight their initiatives, and engage with the campus community. The event provides students with an opportunity to discover new interests, connect with organizations, and celebrate the diversity of student life at UWI.
Resident and Commuting Students Advisorship
The Resident Advisorship Programme plays a vital role in fostering a safe, supportive, and engaging student community for both residential and commuting students. Resident Advisors (RAs) and Commuting Student Advisors (CSAs) serve as peer leaders, mentors, and resource persons who help students navigate university life while promoting personal growth, academic success, and a strong sense of belonging.
Through leadership opportunities, programme planning, conflict resolution, student advocacy, and holistic support, Advisors contribute to creating positive living and learning environments within the halls of residence while also strengthening engagement among the University's commuting student population. The Commuting Student Advisorship extends the reach of student support beyond the halls, ensuring that non-resident students remain connected to campus life, have access to essential resources, and are encouraged to participate fully in the University experience.
Together, the Resident Advisorship and Commuting Student Advisorship programmes provide valuable experience in leadership, communication, teamwork, event management, and student development, while empowering student leaders to make a meaningful and lasting impact across the wider University community.
Guild of Students
The Office of the Guild of Students serves as the centre of student leadership, representation, and engagement at UWI Mona. As the administrative arm of the Guild, the Office oversees the management and operations of the Student Union, including the Guild Office, the University Gym, and the union facilities. It also provides administrative and operational support to the Guild of Students Council, the University's highest student representative body, comprising 43 elected and appointed members.
Through its services, advocacy efforts, and governance support, the Guild promotes student welfare, amplifies the student voice, and fosters a vibrant campus culture. By creating opportunities for leadership, service, and meaningful participation, the Guild of Students empowers students to shape their university experience and contribute positively to the wider UWI community.
