History and Heritage (BA)

Programme Overview

History and related disciplines of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, teach oral and written communication skills, critical reading of all kinds of written, numerical, and visual texts,critical thinking aimed at problem solving and global awareness.These skills are needed in a variety of jobs and vocations in both the private and public sectors. They are equally needed in the development of essential skills for an enlightened citizenry. 

Programme Objectives

To underscore the importance of History and the related disciplines of Archaeology in  the contemporary society and its contrast to where it is coming from whilst enhancing each students oral and written communication skills and improving their critical thinking which will aid with global awareness and problem solving.

Normally an O-Level pass or Grade 1, 2 or 3 CSEC General in History, or Its equivalent.

Students are required to read at least thirteen (13) 3 credit courses for a total of thirty-nine (39) credits for the History & Heritage Studies Major.

  •  Three (3) courses in Year I
  •  Five (5) courses in Year II
  •  Five (5) courses in Year III

Year I
HIST1703: Introduction to History
HIST1901: Introduction to Heritage Studies

Year II
HIST2006: Conquest, colonization and Resistance in  the Caribbean 1600 to the end of Slavery
HIST2007: Freedom, Decolonization and Independence
HIST2901: Heritage Management and Tourism in the  Caribbean 
HIST2902: Caribbean Historical Landscapes and the  Development of Eco-tourism 

Year III
HIST3801: Historical Archaeology* 
(Pre-requisite: Any Archaeology Course OR a level One OR a level Two Heritage Studies Course)
HIST3013: History of Jamaican Landscape
HIST3901: Urban Heritage of Jamaica
