History (BA)

Programme Overview

The teaching of History at the UWI Mona provides a thorough foundation in Caribbean history, heritage and culture, and ex-poses our students to the broader currents of world history which have helped shape the region.

The courses focus on the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, and on the theory and methods of history, archaeology, and heritage studies.

Programme Objectives

Help students to develop the following skills:

•    Knowledge and understanding of the past as a way to understand national identity, culture and explain current global events 

•    Oral and written communication skills 

•    Critical reading of all kinds of written, numerical and visual texts 

•    Analytical and critical thinking aimed at problem-solving 

Admission Requirements

Normally an O-Level pass or Grade 1, 2 or 3 CSEC General in History, or Its equivalent.

Programme Structure

History Majors are required to take a minimum of thirteen (13) History Courses, totaling thirty-nine (39 ) credits, namely:

•    Three (3) courses in Year I,

•    Five (5) courses in Year II 
•    Five (5) in Year III 

Compulsory Courses for History Majors include:


Year I

HIST1601: The Atlantic World 1400-1600
HIST1703:    Introduction to History

Year II

HIST2006: Conquest, colonization and Resistance in the Caribbean 1600 to the end of Slavery

HIST2007:    Freedom, Decolonization and Independence in the Caribbean since 1804

Year III

Two(2) Caribbean History courses.

Any other THREE Level 3 History courses
