The Caribbean Examinations Council, established in 1972, initiated the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in 1997 to replace the GCE A-Level examinations at the end of sixth form or grade 13. This research examined the CAPE Literatures in English curriculum, its implementation, and teachers’ adaptation to it. It examined the factors that influenced the teachers’ response to the new curriculum, the changes that they needed to make to accommodate the new programme, their experiences in implementing the new curriculum, and the resources available to implement what in effect was a major educational innovation. The research also sought to find out whether the teachers’ approach to studying the curriculum would help students establish their identities as Caribbean persons.
