Cardiac Computed Tomography in the Diagnosis of Adult Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Main Pulmonary Artery in the Caribbean

Issue:
DOI:

Definitive diagnosis of an anomalous coronary artery from the main pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) can be difficult.  Cardiac computed tomography (cardiac CT) has the ability to safely, cheaply and non-invasively allow direct visualization of the anomalous coronary connection and can demonstrate the systemic-to-venous flow which underlies the coronary steal phenomenon.

Issue:

Synopsis:
The incidence rate (IR) of acute myocardial infarction was 90.6 per 100 000 population (1:1.9) Afro-Trinidadian to Indo-Trinidadian. The IR was highest among male indo-Trinidadians, St elevation myocardial infarction cases were greater than three times as prevalent among Indo-Trinidadians as Afro-Trinidadians.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the incidence rate (IR) and selected demographic and other epidemiologic characteristics of first-time acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients admitted to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) in South Trinidad, a predominantly Indo-Trinidadian (280 428) and Afro-Trinidadian (127 837) population.

Redo Triple Coronary Artery Bypass Graft on a Jehovah’s Witness Patient: A “Tailored” Approach

INTRODUCTION

Jehovah's Witnesses are considered unusual patients because of their refusal to receive blood transfusions. Some practitioners do not consider the increased risk of death associated with refusal of blood transfusions as a sufficient deterrent. This religious conviction raises problems in the field of ethics and legal and medical management of patients for major surgical procedures in which the use of blood transfusions is an important element.
