On May 8, the University of the West Indies, Western Jamaica Campus (WJC), was host to Greek visual artist and blogger Maria Papaefstathiou under the auspices of Sangster International's MBJ Airports Ltd.
The talk served as part career retrospective and part call to arms for Caribbean creatives in general, and Jamaican designers specifically, to raise the bar in quality and quantity of output.

Two students from the University of the West Indies, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus will be awarded the inaugural Emile Martin scholarship during an awards ceremony to be held on December 14, 2015, 4.30pm at the Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club. This will be the first scholarship awarded as part of an agreement between Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club and the UWI Mona-Western Jamaica Campus, where each year, a student pursuing at least the Minor in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management or Cultural Studies offered by the Institute of Caribbean Studies will be awarded scholarships which will cover the duration of their programme.
Both applicants went through a rigorous selection process, which considered their performance in the Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management programme, which provides the opportunity for students to contribute to Jamaica’s increasing cultural enterprise through examining the cultural and creative industries, entrepreneurship, event planning and management and building the Jamaican brand. This was particularly important considering Emile Martin’s involvement in the Tourism and Travel Industry, and his contribution to the expansion of culture in Western Jamaica.
This scholarship commemorates the life of Emile Martin, Chairman of the Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, one of the cornerstones of Jamaica’s tourism product. The scholarship is valued at $1.035 million and covers the full tuition for a Bachelor of Arts student pursuing in the first instance at least a Minor in Cultural Studies or Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona – Western Jamaica Campus (WJC). The Emile Martin Scholarship is tenable for three years [four years if the student does not have the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations passes or an associate degree] with a total of 90 credits, with the Scholarship student receiving up to US$3000 annually.

(MONTEGO BAY, 15 July 2016) At their inaugural breakfast meeting last Friday, members of the WJC Ambassadorial Corps discussed the growing issue of crime in Western Jamaica, and their commitment to partnering with the UWI Mona-WJC to provide support in the areas of education, mentorship, and job creation.
Ms. Gloria Henry, President of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, spoke of a specific initiative on which the chamber and the UWI, Mona-WJC have already partnered - a comprehensive study on the rise of crime in Western Jamaica; the information provided by the study will help to create a more targeted approach to combating the issue of crime. Mr. Wayne Cummings, Director of Business Process and Administration at Sandals Resorts International, also added to the discussion, highlighting the importance of tackling these issues at the community level.
Other matters discussed in the meeting include the need for members of the Western Jamaica business community to be more involved in ensuring that higher education is accessible to all, which would in turn secure the workforce needed for the region’s growing industries, most notably, business process outsourcing. Managing Director of Amstar DMC Jamaica, Richard Bourke added, “While the entry level positions in these companies are regularly filled locally, there is need for a system that tracks students from classroom to job placement, further ensuring that top and mid-management positions are also occupied by trained and competent Jamaicans.”
Also present were members of staff of the UWI Mona-WJC, with the Campus Director, Mr. Patrick Prendergast, giving a detailed presentation on the way forward of the campus which opened the floor for discussion.
The ambassadors also pledged their commitment to lending support through mentorship for at risk youth in our communities.

The UWI, Mona ranks first in Jamaica among accredited tertiary-level programmes. In 2012, the University was again one of Jamaica’s Top 100 Employers.
