For more than three quarters of a century, the Department of Chemistry at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has produced graduates whose expertise supports critical national functions, including industrial production, environmental assessment and remediation, healthcare systems, quality standards development, scientific research, and innovation. Alumni serve across academia, industry, government, and the private sector throughout Jamaica, the Caribbean, and internationally, demonstrating the Department’s sustained contribution to economic development, knowledge generation, and societal advancement.
Alumni engagement is supported through the Society of Alumni & Friends of the Department of Chemistry, Mona, (ChemSAF) which provides a structured platform for mentorship, professional networking, outreach, and resource mobilisation in support of departmental development and student success.
As the Department looks to the future, it is undertaking a transformative modernization initiative to upgrade and expand teaching and research laboratories, ensuring that future graduates are trained with advanced instrumentation and the practical expertise required in a rapidly evolving scientific landscape.
Through the Friends of Chemistry UWI Mona Endowment Fund and the UWI Department of Chemistry Scholarships & Awards Fund, alumni and partners are invited to play a direct role in sustaining excellence, strengthening research capacity, expanding student opportunity and rewarding meritorious student performance. Together, ChemSAF initiatives and the Endowment Fund support the continuous enhancement of teaching, research infrastructure, and student learning environments at UWI Mona.
Graduates of the Department of Chemistry, The UWI Mona, have pursued distinguished careers across academia, industry, environmental management, healthcare, public service, entrepreneurship, and scientific research both locally and internationally. Their leadership and innovation continue to shape industries, advance discovery, and strengthen communities. Some of our alumni are featured on FiWiScience. Alumni engagement provides an important feedback mechanism informing curriculum relevance, mentoring, internship pathways, and industry alignment. We are proud to highlight members of our alumni community and share their professional journeys, achievements, and reflections on how their training at The UWI Mona shaped their paths.
Our 7 faculties and 12 professional schools offer more than 200 programmes to some 18,000 graduate, undergraduate and continuing studies students.
The UWI, Mona ranks first in Jamaica among accredited tertiary-level programmes. In 2012, the University was again one of Jamaica’s Top 100 Employers.
