Postgraduate diploma programme in Adolescent Health and Advocacy

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the department of Child & Adolescent Health started a Post Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Health & Advocacy in August 2019. The programme is designed to improve the capacity of health and other allied service providers to understand and address the unique needs of adolescents across the Caribbean region. The programme is open to health practitioners, social workers, educators, policy makers, legal and correctional providers and other persons with a vested interest in the well- being of adolescents.

The programme focuses on empowering a spirit of advocacy within the student, to inform their decision-making skills and guide their delivery of optimal services to the adolescent, and development of appropriate policies and programs pertaining to adolescents. Some of the key courses include: Public Health and Policy for Caribbean Adolescent Healthcare; Sexuality and Sexual Behaviour in Caribbean Adolescents; Risk and Resiliency - Mental and Emotional Health in Adolescents; Human Rights, Advocacy, Law and the Caribbean Adolescent; and Interventions to Improve Adolescent Health in the Caribbean. This is a hybrid programme, delivered predominantly online, over 2 semesters (August -December and January - June). Classes are typically at 4-7pm EST, with 1 week of face-to-face instruction per semester. The programme requirements include a first degree from an accredited University, however for those with extensive experience in the field of adolescent care (≥5years) may also apply and will be interviewed to determine acceptance to the programme.
