The School of Medical Radiation Technology (SMRT) was born in November 1965, as a tertiary-level educational institution to facilitate the development of diagnostic radiography in the Caribbean region to supply a steady flow of qualified radiographers to meet the needs of the territory’s health services. . In 2023 the new Bachelor of Science in Radiological Sciences was launched to replace the BSc in Diagnostic Imaging (Radiography). In the new BSc in Radiological Sciences, students had the opportunity to choose between 5 majors, X-ray-CT, X-ray-MRI, X-ray-Ultrasonography, X-Ray-Radiation Therapy, and X-ray-Nuclear Medicine.
The School of Medical Radiation Technology envisions itself becoming the premier regional healthcare training institution providing multiple modality training to meet local, regional, and global demand for imaging services.
The mission of the school is to educate program enrolees in the art and science of medical diagnostic imaging through guided didactic and clinical experiences aimed at development of students into knowledgeable, highly skilled, competent professionals capable of delivering effective patient care and imaging services as members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
Welcome to the School of Medical Radiation Technology (SMRT) in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies Mona. We as a department offer the Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiological Sciences through which we develop students with the relevant scientific knowledge, technical skills, and attitudes necessary to become clinically competent imaging technologists suited for the needs of the Caribbean and international community. As the head of SMRT, I am inspired by the commitment and expertise of my colleagues, the zeal of my students, and the unwavering support of our Alumni. I am excited about the future of radiography and the critical role SMRT will play in it. The Unit contains five full time academic staff and two administrative staff and an auxiliary staff member, who provide quality service to the students and relevant stakeholders of the University.
The SMRT offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Radiological Sciences is designed to provide fundamental and advanced didactic and practice in diagnostic and therapeutic radiography, nuclear medicine, ultrasonography and radiotherapy. This programme will offer both a 4-year and 5-year majors. All students, regardless of major being pursued, will sit the first 3 years together and complete the same requirements within the first 3 years of the degree.
Students must complete all requisite courses within the first 3 years to be able to advance to the 4th year of study. Students enrolled in the BSc in Radiological Sciences, must complete all RDSC courses applicable to their major along with the requisite UWI Mona Foundation courses.
