Using Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve Analysis in Detecting Excess Adiposity in 9–13-year Old South African Children

Issue:
DOI:
Doi:10.7727/wimj.2012.108
Pages:
670–3
Synopsis:
This study confirmed that log10 SF4:BMI (subcutaneous to overall fat) at conventional cut-off points had a relatively high sensitivity and specificity in detecting excess adiposity, and therefore could be used to identify excess adiposity in South African children.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Little is known concerning the applicability of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis in detecting excess adiposity in preadolescent South African children. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of body mass index (BMI) and skinfold thickness:BMI (subcutaneous to overall fat) in detecting excess adiposity in preadolescent urban South African school children.

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Children in the Bahamas

DOI:
Doi:10.7727/wimj.2011.154

Objective: Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) is a common bacterial infection that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This bacterium causes a chronic infection that is causally related to illnesses ranging from gastritis, peptic ulcer disease to gastric cancer. It is generally considered that it is acquired in childhood but the prevalence varies considerably between countries and communities. There are few data on the prevalence of H pylori in the Caribbean and none on the prevalence of H pylori in children in the Bahamas.

Effects of Steroid Treatment on Bone Mineral Metabolism in Children with Glucocorticoid-sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2011.046
Pages:
627–30
Synopsis:
Bone mineralization was negatively affected by steroid treatment in children with nephrotic syndrome. These children should undergo regular bone mineral density evaluation, and an appropriate therapeutic approach should be planned.
