"Through sheer effort, skill and determination, The UWI Mona Robotics Team managed to transform their pile of mainly salvaged parts into not one, but two robots that commanded the international stage. Robots Astro George and Jaunte gave it their all and made their team of creators proud when the curtains came down on the 2019 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Southeast Conference Competition on April 14. Astro George’s performance in the Student Hardware Open category earned the team a third place spot, while Jaunte, who experienced a few hiccups on the course, put them in 13th position in the Student Hardware University category. The UWI, Mona team competed against more than 50 teams from the IEEE Region 3, which includes universities and colleges in the south-east region of the USA and Jamaica.
The team was coached by Yekini Wallen-Bryan who is an FST graduate and employee in the Physics department. It comprised members from both FST and the Faculty of Engineering."
