DLS Grad participates in ISA /IMO deep sea exploration and mining workshops

Tremain Bowman (graduate student, Department of Life Sciences) participated in the contractor training programme hosted by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organisation (IOM), Szczecin, Poland at the University of Szczecin, Poland from September 5-30, 2022. The workshop covered topical issues such as the Law of the Sea, Marine Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Diatomology and Environmental Strategies for deep sea exploration and mining. Tremain spent two weeks (October 1- October 13) in Prague where she was trained in the field of polymetallic nodules metallurgic processes at the University of Chemistry and Technology. She further participated in the Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative workshop in Seocheon, Korea that was hosted at the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK). The workshop focussed on taxonomic research of deep-sea organisms. Tremain found the opportunities most rewarding. “The networking opportunities gained from the training and the conferences have proven useful as I continue to be a part of webinars and associations that deal with the deep-sea and marine research. Since my training, I have steadily learned and developed new knowledge and skills”.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) provides many training opportunities for young professionals from developing countries.
