EBSCO Solar Project Underway in FST

If you have been wondering about the railings you see going up on the roofs of the Science & Engineering Branch Library (SEBL) and the Physics Lab, then wonder no more! They are part of the infrastructure for a substantial solar installation project currently underway in the Faculty of Science and Technology. In 2018, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona library was awarded an EBSCO solar grant of US$100,000 to implement a solar photovoltaic system on both roofs. The UWI library is the first winner of the EBSCO solar grant outside the US. The Department of Physics is a project partner as well as Solar Buzz Jamaica, who is doing the installation. It is estimated that the 40kW system once fully installed will save The UWI almost $2m annually. It will also be used as part of The UWI curriculum to teach students about solar energy as it is being designed and labelled specifically for student interaction. FST welcomes the installation as we move to become the first 'green' Faculty on the campus.
