The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona, proudly congratulates alumna Dr Zahra Oliphant on her appointment as Acting Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica’s National Fisheries Authority (NFA), effective August 31, 2026.
Dr Oliphant brings extensive scientific knowledge, proven public-sector leadership and a strong dedication to advancing the sustainable management of Jamaica’s fisheries. A distinguished scientist, Dr Oliphant completed her Bachelor of Science with a double major in Zoology and Biochemistry, Master of Philosophy in Zoology and Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology at The UWI. Her postgraduate research focused extensively on Jamaica’s freshwater fauna, equipping her with valuable knowledge of the country’s distinctive aquatic ecosystems.
“As a large ocean state, Jamaica is heavily reliant on our aquatic systems and the role of the NFA in safeguarding these systems for future generation is critical. I will continue to build on the successes of my predecessor for the time I am in this role and with the hardworking staff of the NFA, elevate the Authority to a higher level,” Dr Oliphant shared.
Dr Oliphant joined the Government of Jamaica in 2016 as Chief Research Officer at the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology. She later served as Acting Director of Strategic Planning and Performance Management at the Ministry before joining the NFA as Principal Director of its Fisheries Compliance, Licensing and Statistics Division. Throughout her public-sector career, she has demonstrated strong leadership and a firm commitment to national development.
Her appointment reflects the important contributions that FST graduates continue to make in science, environmental stewardship, public-sector leadership and national development. It also highlights the value of scientific training in shaping informed policies and strengthening the institutions responsible for protecting Jamaica’s natural resources.
