The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), The UWI Mona is delighted to announce that Dr. Shaneica Lester, a Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Geology at FST, has been appointed as a Fellow in Chapter 20: Regional Similarities and Differences – Latin America and the Caribbean to the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This appointment is for the period 2023-2026 initially, with a focus on addressing environmental change and development challenges in the Latin America and Caribbean sub-region. As a Fellow, Dr. Lester will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts from around the world in the intergovernmental scientific assessment process. Their collective efforts aim to generate insights and recommendations that will inform significant global policy decisions, negotiations, and transformative shifts in thinking. Additionally, Fellows engage in training and outreach activities to contribute to the broader dissemination of knowledge.

The Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) is a flagship integrated environmental assessment led by UNEP. It offers a comprehensive evaluation of the global environmental landscape, covering key areas such as air, climate, water, land, and biodiversity. Drawing on major assessments conducted by international science panels and United Nations bodies, GEO-7 examines the interactions between social, economic, and environmental drivers to evaluate the effectiveness of different policy responses in achieving sustainable environmental pathways.

The FST congratulates Dr. Shaneica Lester on this remarkable achievement and wishes her success in her new role/portfolio. Her appointment as a Fellow to the Global Environment Outlook is a testament to her expertise, dedication, and contributions to the field of environmental research.
