FST mourns the loss of a Colleague and Friend

The University of the West Indies, Mona, regrets to inform you that one of our colleagues, Mr. Peter Gayle, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2020.

Mr. Gayle was employed to The University of the West Indies, Mona as the Principal Scientific Officer at the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory (DBML) in 1985 up to the time of up of his death. He was a founding member of The UWI Sub Aqua club, assisting in training the majority of Jamaica's Scuba diving marine scientists.

Mr. Gayle was a dedicated Caribbean Coral Reef scientist and is responsible for developing the Acropora Iron Reef (AIR) coral nursery and the first successful coral micro-fragmentation nursery at the DBML. He was the UWI’s representative on the Board of the Association of the Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean (AMLC) for over 15 years.

In light of this death, the UWI flags will be flown at half-mast on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

The University extends condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gayle.
