FST Opens Wellness Office to Support Students and Staff

The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, has taken a significant step toward promoting the well-being of its community with the establishment of a dedicated Wellness Office, the first of its kind within the Faculty. The office officially opened its doors to students and staff in September 2025, providing a centralized space for mental health and wellness support.

The Wellness Office is staffed by Dr. Debbie-Ann Chambers, a Counseling Psychologist from the University Health Centre (UHC) at The UWI Mona, who has been serving the Faculty as the Wellness Officer since September 2024. Dr. Chambers brings extensive expertise in mental health and student wellness, and her presence within the Faculty marks an important milestone in FST’s commitment to fostering a supportive and healthy academic environment.

University life is exciting and rewarding but often comes with high levels of stress and pressure. Students face the challenge of balancing academic demands, financial responsibilities, and social adjustments, while staff manage teaching, research, and administrative duties. Without proper support, these pressures can negatively impact motivation, performance, and overall well-being.

The FST Wellness Office was created to address these challenges by providing a safe and accessible space where students and staff can seek help, develop coping strategies, and maintain balance in their personal and academic lives. The initiative reflects the Faculty’s understanding that mental health is foundational to academic and professional success. By normalizing conversations about wellness, the Faculty aims to reduce stigma, promote self-care, and foster a culture of empathy and resilience.
