FST Researchers Explore Marine Science and Water Quality Research at Cefas, United Kingdom

Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to highlight the recent international engagement of Dr. Debbie-Ann Gordon-Smith and Ms. Pearl Bergan, a postgraduate student in the Department of Chemistry, who visited the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) in Lowestoft, United Kingdom, from February 14–20, 2026.

During the visit, they engaged in meetings with marine researchers and were exposed to the research being conducted at the Centre.

The delegation also toured Cefas’ state-of-the-art research vessel, Endeavour, which supports a wide range of marine scientific investigations, including fisheries assessments, environmental monitoring, and oceanographic research. The visit offered a firsthand look at the infrastructure and technologies that support marine research at sea and underscored the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing marine resources.

The experience is expected to contribute to ongoing research activities within the Department of Chemistry and enhance opportunities for future collaboration between The UWI and Cefas in areas related to marine science, environmental monitoring, and water quality research.

The visit was sponsored by Cefas.
