FST Student Wins Title at Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC) Jamaica

"ST. CATHERINE, JAMAICA – JA Bioplastics, a startup that uses biotechnology to create plant-based plastic materials, captured first prize at the national finals of the Entrepreneurship World Cup competition held recently in Jamaica.

JA Bioplastics uses biotechnology to create plant-based plastic materials and resins that are 100% degradable in soil, compo-stable, water-soluble and fire-retardant. The product provides clients with a triple bottom line impact through social, environmental and economic benefits. It has the potential to replace up to 40% of synthetic plastic saving the environment from $1 trillion of damages.

“Locally in Jamaica, some single-use plastic is banned as do many other countries,” said Jordan Freeman, founder of JA Bioplastics. “Manufacturers are left without a solution and we will provide them with natural resins/pellets that they can use to mold and produce single-use plastic that is natural and biodegradable.”

Led by a pair of students from the University of the West Indies, JA Bioplastics emerged victorious from a pool of 67  contestants – each receiving access to free virtual training services to help them take their venture to the next level."

Also from the faculty, is third place awardee Tracie-Ann Hymann. She is the founder of Skolastik Oasis Caribbean, which is a program that seeks to bridge the gap between students and tertiary education financing, through the identification of scholarships, and the provision of application support.
