A throng of almost 100 members of the UWI, Mona community along with persons from other institutions, companies and members of the general public attended the 6th lecture in a series of free public lectures held monthly, entitled Science For Today. This month's topic "AI and Automation - Disruption or Opportunity?" struck a positive chord with attendees who filled the host venue found in the Department of Computing, in a matter of minutes and were thoroughly engaged for the duration of the event. The forum was aptly moderated by Dr. Maurice McNaughton, Director of the Centre for IT Enabled Innovation, Mona School of Business and Management. Panelists and their respective presentations were as follows:

  1. Mr. Howard Mitchell, President of the Private Sector Of Jamaica - The Role of Technology in Jamaica's Development - How do we get from here to there?
  2. Dr. Gunjan Mansingh, Head of Department, Department of Computing, The UWI Mona - Demystifying AI
  3. Professor Daniel Coore, Professor, Department of Computing, The UWI Mona - From Blockchain to Smart Machines: Threats and Opportunities of Automation

Through the Science For Today initiative, the faculty remains committed to being the voice of authority on all-things science in Jamaica, as we aim to build the knowledge base of all disciplines among the wider public.
