Artificial Intelligence (AI) researcher Matthew Stone and graduate student in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of The West Indies, Mona is advocating for a ban on the use of generative AI in political advertisements for the upcoming general election, warning of the potential irreparable harm posed by deepfakes. Stone, who serves as CEO of Stone Technologies Limited and president of the Jamaica Artificial Intelligence Association, raised his concerns during a recent appearance on the virtual talk show Heart to Heart. He emphasized the challenges of tracing the origins of AI-generated fake content, particularly deepfakes, which could be weaponized by political rivals to manipulate public perception. Stone cautioned that, if left unchecked, this technology could have a lasting negative impact on the integrity of elections, suggesting that preventative measures, such as a ban on AI-generated political ads, are necessary to protect the democratic process.
