Pride of Herbert Morrison shines at Math Olympiad

Austin Martin, a 16-year-old student at Herbert Morrison Technical High School in St James, Jamaica, has made his parents proud by being named a member of the 2023 Jamaica Mathematical Olympiad (JMO) team organised by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona. He was one of four students selected to represent Jamaica at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad (OMCC) in El Salvador. Austin's commitment and determination, along with his exceptional performance in the Jamaica Math Olympiad, earned him a spot on the team.

Despite living in Montego Bay, Austin traveled to Kingston every weekend for three months to undergo rigorous training for the competition. His dedication and hard work paid off when he was chosen as one of the four members of the Jamaican team. The team didn't secure a win at the event, but they represented Jamaica as the sole English-speaking country and were praised for their participation, considering the language barrier they faced.

Austin's mother, Tanya, highlighted his natural talent for mathematics. Austin aspires to become an astrophysicist, an actuary, or a marine scientist in the future.

The Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad team consisted of Austin Martin, Joshua Walcott, and Cruz Caine from Campion College, and Jo'Anna Hill from Montego Bay High School as well as  Dr. Samuel McDaniel (Coordinator, JMO) and Mr Ajani Ausaru (Deputy Coordinator, JMO). The team was recognized for their outstanding performance in both the local and international competitions. Jamaica has been participating in the Mathematical Olympiad since 2010 and continues to be the only English-speaking country in the event, which attracts young mathematical talents from various countries in the region.
