Remembering former Head of the Department of Geography and Geology, Dr. Barry Floyd

The Faculty notes the passing of our former colleague, Dr. Barry Floyd, who passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.  Dr. Floyd tenure commenced at The University of the West Indies, Mona in 1966 where he transformed the fledgling sub-department of Geography into a full department in the then Faculty of Natural Sciences. Through his leadership, the department saw an increase in the number of staff and an expansion of the undergraduate programme along with the development of an active postgraduate student body.

Dr. Floyd became the first Head of the ‘new’ Department of Geography in 1971. He also founded the Jamaican Geographical Society in 1966 and inspired the formation of The UWI undergraduate Geography Society.

Dr. Floyd’s enduring legacy has been the foundation of a well-rounded geography teaching programme which catered to students from across the Caribbean and strong research and publication outputs.

The Faculty extends condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Floyd.
