Sisterhood in STEM: Cultivating Math Excellence Through Support and Service

There’s something special happening in the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Among the formulas, probability models, and data charts, three young women are proving that math isn’t just about numbers, it’s about purpose, passion, and giving back.

Meet Janoya Rowe, Kimberly Chung, and Leah Cassie - three Actuarial Science students whose stories remind us that excellence in mathematics goes far beyond the classroom. Together, these students have earned nearly $3 million in scholarships.

Beyond their academic achievements, they serve as peer mentors for the Faculty’s recently established Math Help Desk, an initiative that provides support to students who are facing challenges in mathematics. Through this role, they not only strengthen their own understanding but also help others find confidence and success in math.

Janoya Rowe: Fusing Faith, Maths, and “Vibes”

Janoya Rowe, a third-year Actuarial Science student, is a recipient of the Jamaica Energy Partners Tertiary Scholarship, awarded annually and renewable for multiple years. But Janoya’s story is about more than her scholarship. She describes herself as a “vibes master for the Lord” -  a title that perfectly captures her radiant energy. For her, mathematics, ministry, and leadership go hand in hand. She’s proof that faith and intellect can thrive side by side, inspiring others to find joy and purpose in what they do.

Kimberly Chung: Faith, Focus, and the Power of Perseverance

For Kimberly Chung, numbers tell stories of resilience and faith. Pursuing a BSc in Actuarial Science, Kimberly has been recognized with both the Aisha King-Rainford Scholarship and the Fullerton-Long Caribbean Scholarship for her exceptional academic performance. When she’s not buried in calculations, Kimberly unwinds with a good mystery thriller novel, a love that mirrors her curiosity and analytical mind. She’s also on a journey of deepening her relationship with God, which she says has brought her tremendous personal growth. Her favourite scripture, Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” is her constant reminder that strength comes from above.

Leah Cassie: Balancing Books, Travel, and Growth

Leah Cassie brings her own brand of quiet brilliance to the world of Actuarial Science. For the past three years, she has been supported by the NCB Tertiary Scholarship, recognizing her consistency and excellence. Leah loves to read and travel — experiences that broaden her worldview and keep her grounded. Her curiosity and love for learning continue to guide her journey as she pursues academic and personal growth.
