Toni-Ann Hendricks' (Graduate student, Physics) exchange semester at the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway, between August 7 and December 20, 2024, stands as a transformative chapter in her academic and personal journey. Enabled through the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Programme, this experience allowed her to deepen her knowledge in her field of study while gaining a new perspective on global energy challenges, providing invaluable opportunities for growth.
Toni-Ann’s academic focus at UiB included courses such as Geographical Information Systems: Theory and Practice, Energy Transition (SDG7), and research support. These courses are highly relevant to her ongoing studies in her current programme, Master of Philosophy in Physics in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The UWI Mona, where her focus areas include energy, renewable energy, and climate change. Prior to her current programme, she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Energy and Environmental Physics with a minor in Management Studies.
During her time in Bergen, Toni-Ann had the privilege of visiting key companies and stakeholders involved in Norway's fossil fuel and large carbon-emitting industries. Visits to cutting-edge facilities, such as the Northern Lights Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, highlighted the innovative measures being taken to reduce CO₂ emissions through advanced technology. At the BIR waste-to-energy facility, she observed how waste management can be effectively integrated with energy production, fostering sustainable solutions. Moreover, her experience with Norway's largest energy company gave her an in-depth understanding of the complex relationship between traditional fossil fuel production and efforts to transition toward greener energy alternatives.
In sharing her experience Toni-Ann noted, “the exchange proved to be an incredible journey of self-discovery. I learned so much about myself, from navigating cultural differences to embracing new challenges and activities. I am immensely grateful for the friendships I formed, the lessons I learned, and the memories I created during these five short but impactful months. I wholeheartedly encourage all students to try and participate in exchange programs.” Toni-Ann extends her sincere gratitude to The University of the West Indies, Mona, particularly the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Department of Physics, for offering her this life-changing opportunity. She also acknowledges the unwavering support and guidance from the International Students Office team throughout the application process.
