UWI @ COP25

The UWI partnered with the University of the South Pacific (USP) and the United Nations Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP) to host a side event at COP25 in Madrid, Spain on “Perspectives on implementing evidence-based climate finance”. UWI was represented by Dr. Donovan Campbell, regional climate change specialist and Head of the Department of Geography and Geology at UWI Mona. UWI recently established a letter of Cooperation the University of the South Pacific (USP) and the United Nations Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP) focused on Climate Risk Insurance (CRI) and Adaptation in the Caribbean. The collaboration is to facilitate inter-regional, South-South learning and research. The signatories will work together so as to explore the socioeconomic and regulatory needs and demands for disaster risk finance. One of the objectives is to develop or assess innovative climate financing mechanisms and identify how they could be integrated into the Caribbean or Pacific Islands disaster management and response tool box.

COP25 (or the 25th staging of the Conference of the Parties) is the United Nations’ annual  Climate Change Conference which brings all countries together to discuss and negotiate global progress on the issue.
