Dr. Sherene James-Williamson (Department of Geography and Geology) has received Funding under a UNESCO International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) for her project "Bringing Geology and Geoheritage to Life". The project will span 4-years and aims to utilize augmented reality and geographical information system technologies to raise awareness on the potential of geology, geological processes (active and past) and geoheritage to foster sustainable development and disaster preparedness. It will provide an inventory of important geosites that should be protected and used as geoscience education tools. The initial focus on Jamaican sites will be later scaled up to include other countries in the Latín America and Caribbean region. Along with Dr. Sherene James-Williamson as Principal Investigator, the interdisciplinary project team includes local and International researchers:  Professor Simon Mitchell (Department of Geography and Geology) and Dr Ashley Hamilton-Taylor (Department of Computing) from The UWI  Mona, Dr Earl Edward's from The UWI St. Augustine, Dr Lesley-Gayle Atkinson, Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts, Dr. Katherine Ellins, University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Kim Whitehall, Cloudyness, Dr. Benjamin van Wyk de Vries, Université Clermont Auvergne, France and Dr. Catalina Gonzalez Tejada, Colombia Geological Survey as project team members. The Faculty extends congratulation to Dr. Williamson and team.
