The Faculty of Science and Technology continues to demonstrate its commitment to The UWI’s Triple A Strategy, facilitating ACCESS to tertiary education by linking our students to scholarship opportunities offered by the Faculty, The UWI and external donor organizations. We partner with local and international industry players to bring to our students internship and scholarship opportunities like the NBCF/BOOST and Huawei Seeds for the Future Programs which ALIGN with the needs of Jamaica and the Caribbean. Through constant reassessment of our programs we are AGILE in responding to the needs of all our stakeholders.

Scholarships and Bursaries
Internship Opportunities
  • Huawei Seeds for the Future Programme: This programme involves a 2-week student cultural exchange to China learning 5G and other technologies at the Huawei headquarter.  Second and third year students pursuing courses in the Departments of Physics, Computing or the Faculty of Engineering are eligible for this programme.
  • The Huawei Seeds Scholarship: This programme will be combined with the Seeds For The Future in 2021. Selection of scholarship awardees will be based on individual overall performance from the 2021 Seeds For The Future programme. Second and third year students pursuing courses in the Departments of Physics, Computing or the Faculty of Engineering are eligible for this programme.
  • Goldman Sachs: Goldman Sachs recruits final year students in their second semester as interns. Previous participants have transitioned to full-time employment in cities such as Hong Kong. Students pursuing programmes in the Department of Computing or the Faculty of Engineering are eligible for this programme.
  • IBM: IBM has made internship opportunities available to final year students pursuing a programme in the Department of Computing.
  • Centre for Marine Sciences Internship Opportunity - January 2024 Cycle
  • CEMEX Campus: CEMEX Campus is a new partnership with the Caribbean Cement Company that exposes second and third year students to virtual learning sessions on the Cement Industry over a 3 week period. Students enrolled in the Departments of Chemistry, Physics or the Faculty of Engineering are eligible for this programme.

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

At The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, students are encouraged to spend one or two semesters (except the final semester of the final year) at any of our partner universities at no additional tuition cost.  We have reciprocal exchange arrangements with some of the world’s most prestigious universities, see listing https://www.mona.uwi.edu/iso/our-partners-0.     Students may also opt to spend one or two semesters at either the Cave Hill or St. Augustine Campuses of the UWI. 

To qualify to participate, students are required to:
  1. maintain a “B” average;
  2. have completed at least one academic year at UWI;
  3. be a registered full-time student; and, be in good financial standing.
Grades obtained at the host university will go towards the award of The UWI degree. 
  
The International Office coordinates, in collaboration with our international funding agencies, partners and the Regional Headquarters four scholarships to facilitate the participation of students in the exchange programme.  The scholarships are: 
  1. Canada-CARICOM Scholarship (Canada)
  2. Emerging Leaders of the Americas Scholarship (Canada)
  3. ERASMUS+ Scholarships (Europe)
  4. Caribbean Integration Programme Scholarship

LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

  • The Earth Prize, a global $200,000 environmental sustainability competition for students between the ages of 13 and 19, which will reward the teams whose projects have the most potential to address environmental issues.
