Building on a Legacy of Excellence |Establishment of The Enith & Victor Bradley & ICENS Scholarship Fund

L-R: Prof. Michael Taylor (Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology), Prof. Charles Grant (Director General, ICENS) and Dr. Parris Lyew Ayee (Board Chair, ICENS). The Enith & Victor Bradley & ICENS Scholarship Fund handing over ceremony held on October 22, 2021.

The establishment of The Enith & Victor Bradley & ICENS Scholarship Fund is a direct testament to the saying ‘never forget your roots’. Why? The Scholarship Fund was established by David Bradley (Emeritus Professor of Radiation and Medical Physics, University of Surrey and Professor of Nuclear Physics, Sunway University, Malaysia) to commemorate the life of his mother, Enith (a native of St. Ann, Jamaica) and his father, Victor (a British soldier deployed to Jamaica during the Second World War at the Gibraltar Camp). In maintaining his maternal link to Jamaica, Prof. Bradley has sought not only to serve in a professional capacity as collaborative partner and member of the Technical Committee Board for ICENS but also to become a contributor to developing a cadre of local scientist. His legacy and that of his parents will be conferred on graduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Science and Technology who are pursuing Masters degrees in Medical Physics with specialisation in Radiotherapy or Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostics, Nuclear Sciences, Biomedical Radiation Science or Biomedical Instrumentation.  The ICENS is matching the contribution of Professor Bradley bringing the Scholarship Fund value to four thousand pounds.

The official handing over ceremony for The Enith & Victor Bradley & ICENS Scholarship Fund was held on October 22, 2021. The event was a signature event of the celebration of Nuclear Science Week (October 18-22, 2021) by the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) and the Faculty of Science and Technology, The UWI Mona. The acknowledgement of Nuclear Science week also included a presentation on the life and work of Prof. Gerald Lalor entitled, Professor Gerald Lalor: The Introduction of Nuclear Technology to the Caribbean and its impact on Regional Development . It was delivered by Prof. Charles Grant (Director General, ICENS) on October 21, 2021. Prof. Lalor is considered the ‘Father of Nuclear Technology’ in the Caribbean and his invaluable contribution to science, technology, innovation and academia will forever be cemented in the minds of current and future generations of scientist.

The Faculty celebrates the legacy of Prof. Lalor and extends gratitude to Prof. Bradley, both locally, regionally and internationally recognised pioneers in the field of Nuclear Technology.
