Earthquake Unit and Department of Physics Collaborate to Host Oracabessa High School for Educational Visit

On April 15, 2025, the Earthquake Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Physics at The University of the West Indies, Mona, hosted twenty-five (25) students from Oracabessa High School for an enriching educational visit. The initiative allowed students to explore disaster management and weather systems. The visit offered a unique opportunity for students to engage with real-world applications of climate science and instrumentation.

The students were introduced to the department's main weather station, where they learned about the design, operation, and data collection methods used in professional meteorological monitoring. Additionally, the students explored a scaled-down weather station prototype, an innovative project developed by undergraduate students enrolled in the ELET2415 (Practices in Electronic Design II) course. This hands-on segment allowed the high schoolers to see how academic theory translates into practical design and monitoring tools.

A dedicated team, including Dr. Jayaka Campbell (lecturer), Mr. Kevaughn Williams (graduate student) and  Mr.Andre Cunningham (graduate student), and undergraduate students Lui McFarlane, Devon Anglin, and Jarvis Green, from the Department of Physics guided the day's activities.

The Department of Physics and the Earthquake Unit continue to demonstrate their commitment to science education through community engagement, helping to inspire the next generation of scientists and disaster management professionals.
