World Meteorological Day (WMD) is celebrated every year to attract the attention of the world towards the changes in the weather and climate of the Earth for the safety and wellbeing of society. The theme for this year is “The Ocean, our climate and weather” in conjunction with launch of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The theme celebrates World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO’s) focus in connecting the ocean, climate and weather within the Earth System. The Decade galvanizes efforts to gather ocean science – through innovative and transformative ideas - as the basis of information to support sustainable development. When it comes to the weather and climate, most of us think only about what is happening in the atmosphere. If we ignore the ocean, however, we miss a big piece of the picture.
In recognising WMD, the Climate Studies Group Mona (CSGM) through its partnership with the Meteorological Service Jamaica and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) hosted the launch of the new Automatic Weather Station recently installed at The University of West Indies, Mona. The launch included a symbolic ribbon cutting and introduce a platform for accessing near real time meteorological data for decision making.

In 1994 the Climate Studies Group, Mona (CSGM) was formed within the Physics Department of the University of the West Indies. Physicists engaging in climate studies is not unusual since physics is the main discipline used to understand climate processes – the equations of motion, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, radiation and cloud physics as well as equation for atmospheric water. Climate, rather than Weather, is the subject of investigation.
