Meet Dr. Arpita Mandal | An Ardent FST Academic Demonstrating Innovation in Teaching | Department of Geography and Geology

Dr. Mandal has made significant contributions to the development and delivery of a number of undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department. She has also played an instrumental role in the development of a four-module course on "Water and Wastewater Management" for the online MSc in Sustainable Development program for the University Consortium for Small Island States of Caribbean and Pacific (UCSIS). Her extensive research experience in Hydrology and Hydrological Modelling, Hydrogeology, Climate change and its impact on water resources, flood and landslide risk and disaster management, enables her to bring real-world examples to her teaching, making it more relatable to her students.

Dr. Mandal's dedication to her students extends beyond the classroom. In an effort to improve the learning experience of her students, she donated a DC Resistivity Meter in 2009, and purchased the pH Meter and Conductivity Meter through the New Initiative Research Grant in 2008. Both have been extensively used for water quality testing by Postgraduate students doing fieldwork. Dr. Mandal further went on to purchase 10 desktop computers through funding received from a project which have been used in teaching and learning in the Department.

Dr. Mandal believes in exposing her students to real-world experiences. As such, she involved her undergraduates in data collection and training for a Royal Society funded project examining flooding in Kingston and Georgetown Guyana. She has also included students in research projects and consultancies, such as the State of The Jamaican Climate project and the Sediment Budget Monitoring project. The involvement of her graduate students in these projects ensures they too gain valuable research experience and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the field of hydrology.

In addition to her research and teaching, Dr. Mandal is committed to promoting student engagement and leadership development. She facilitated her undergraduate and research students' participation in the recently held World Water Day Seminar organized by the Geological and Geographical Student Society in the Department. Students presented their work on water resource and flooding in Jamaica, which allowed them to express their knowledge, developed their public speaking skill and further built their confidence. Dr. Mandal's support of her students' participation in these events exemplifies her commitment to their growth and development through the hidden curriculum.

Dr. Mandal is a knowledgeable and passionate lecturer who is able to explain complex geological concepts in a clear and engaging way, while also fostering a deep appreciation and curiosity for the subject in her students.
