In an effort to combat the widespread fear and apprehension towards Mathematics, the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona through its outreach arm, recently organized the second edition of "The UWI Math Fair" held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at St. Hilda’s Diocesan High School in Brown’s Town, St. Ann. The event attracted 361 students from fourth to sixth form, accompanied by their teachers, representing 14 high schools across St. Ann, St. Mary, and Trelawny.
The primary objective of the fair was to foster a love for Mathematics among students, encouraging them to see the subject as engaging, rewarding, and essential for their academic and professional growth as well as to nurture an ethos of excellence in Mathematics. The event featured a range of activities aimed at achieving this goal.
One of the highlights of the fair was the information sessions that shed light on the various mathematics programs offered at The UWI, as well as the numerous career opportunities available through studying mathematics. These sessions were designed to inspire students and showcase the real-world applications of mathematical concepts.
Another engaging aspect of the fair was the breakout sessions and a mini-quiz competition, which many students described as the most exciting part of the day. These activities were tailored to enhance problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and teamwork among participants, making mathematics more approachable and enjoyable.
The fair also served as a platform to establish partnerships with high schools, offering support to their Mathematics Departments and promoting collaboration in educational initiatives. The presence of esteemed guests such as Ms. Gina Tomlinson-Williams from JPS, Ms. Simone Williams from the Ministry of Education and Youth, Ms. Camae Johnson-Burrell, and Horace Donaldson, Regional Math Coordinators, added valuable insights and expertise to the event.
Special recognition was given to Mrs. Heather Reid-Johnson, Principal, and Ms. Kimberly Kelly, Head of Department (Mathematics) at St. Hilda’s High School, for their generous hospitality and support in hosting the fair, which contributed significantly to its success.
The involvement of 12 staff members from the Mathematics Department, along with 23 second and third-year students, demonstrates the Faculty’s commitment to promoting mathematics education and nurturing talent in this field.
The Department of Mathematics expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, participants, and supporters who contributed to making The UWI Math Fair a resounding success and looks forward to future endeavors aimed at building a stronger mathematical foundation and cultivating a long lasting passion for mathematics among students.
